Town of Morris Chapel

Nimrod Morris was the founder of the small, unincorporated town. He was a devout Christian and a preacher. Morris traded a mule and a muzzle-loading rifle for property where Morris Chapel now sits and gave the land for the Methodist church and cemetery.

In the beginning, Morris Chapel was a farming community where the settlers built cabins and grist mills and schools..and churches. The residents had an aggressive belief in hard work, self reliance and the fear of God.

Today, Morris Chapel, still unincorporated, is a friendly, growing community. Residents have a lot of community pride. There are several veterans and civic groups in Morris Chapel, and the civic center is now located on the former Morris Chapel school site. Students from this community now attend West Hardin Elementary.

Town of Saltillo

Saltillo is one of the three incorporated towns in Hardin County. It is located seventeen miles from West Hardin School in the Northwest Corner of the county on Highway 69. The town was incorporated in 1951 and governed with a mayor and five aldermen. The population is 417.

Saltillo has several antebellum homes, including the Meady White home which now appears on the National Registry of Historic Places. Also, located in the town is the Parker House now used as a bed and breakfast.

There is rich history steeped in the town. At one time, it was the largest shipping point on this part of the river. More cotton and ties were shipped anually from Saltillo than from any other town in the county. People came from Jackson to pick up supplies arriving on the riverboats.

One of the last few remaining ferries is located at Saltillo, which runs six days a week. The river landing is known to many fishermen as a good place to dock their boats, and there is also a marina located here. Many out of town people own cabins and enjoy spending time in the area.

The annual event held each year is Saltillo's River Day, which features a parade, flea market, cloggers, music performances, dance, and various activities. Huge crowds attend the festival.
